In fact it has been identified as one of two countries in Asia the other being India making a big impact on the MICE (Meetings Incentives Conventions and Exhibitions) global stage. IT&CM China returns to Shanghai in 2009 with steady growth in MICE activities China s burgeoning economic growth has averaged above 10 per cent in recent years. Despite the current financial turmoil the country s economy is expected to expand albeit at a lower rate. Hence it still looks set to fuel a steady upward increase of MICE travel. In Shanghai alone the city is expected to host about 500 exhibitions and over 1 000 conferences of international scale in 2010. We share the views of many experts that the Shanghai World Expo 2010 will serve as a catalyst to propel China into its next phase of MICE development. Therefore we have decided that the next IT&CM China should be staged in Shanghai said Darren Ng Managing Director of TTG Asia Media. IT&CM (Incentive Travel & Conventions Meetings) China 2009 will be held from 15 to 17 April 2009 at ShanghaiMart Expo China. With a successful track record since 2007 the exhibition continues its effort in Promoting China to the World and the World to China. It continues to attract a high percentage of past exhibitors to leverage on this established industry platform to showcase their products and services. At the same time IT&CM China has drawn several new exhibitors who are excited about the prospects China offers. First-time participants to the show include companies and organisations from Taiwan Turkey Japan and Montreal with Chinese national tourism organisations (NTO) pavilions from Dalian Guilin Hangzhou and host city Shanghai. Guilin pavilion to make strong debut Many have waxed lyrical over Guilin s splendid scenery and the Guilin Tourism Board (GTB) will be making a concerted effort to drive more visitors to the province with a big showcase of their best offerings to IT&CM China buyers. According to the GTB 14 million tourists visited the city in 2006 an 11 per cent increase over 2005 figures. The growth in international visitors was particularly strong with 16 per cent more foreign tourists in 2006 than in 2005. It has forecast a steady 12 per cent growth rate in coming years. The IT&CM China team made a visit to Guilin recently at the invitation of the GTB. During the trip a presentation was given to the Mayor of Guilin and industry members. Interesting facts The UN World Tourism Organisation estimates China s tourism sector to grow annually by 12.8 per cent reaching 100 million by 2020. China is currently the third largest business travel market behind UK and USA. The Chinese MICE sector is growing at an annual rate of 20%. By 2020 China will become the largest source of international tourism and the number one travel destination and it will have the largest domestic tourism market in the world. China has more than 190 000 social associations and the value of their annual conferences exceeds 100 billion yuan. Therearemorethan200millionChinesetodaythatarefinanciallyable to travel overseas. In 2007 China held over 5 400 exhibitions and conferences with the total area for exhibitions or conferences reaching 2.4 million square metres ranking third in the world.
