C O m C H A R R I O L u s A eston residents will be dazzled by the upcoming musical extravaganza presented by the City of Weston and the Weston Philharmonic Society. Cirque de la Symphonie is set for Thursday October 29th at 8 p.m. in the Cypress Bay High School Auditorium as a collaboration between two premier entertainment teams the Symphony of the Americas and Cirque du Soleil. Since its inception over ten years ago the Weston Philharmonic Society strives to bring quality symphony entertainment to the community. The organization introduces the classical music arts to Weston s school aged children. Along with the City of Weston the society presents two top notch symphony performances each year to residents of all ages. Last spring s spectacular performance Opera to Broadway was a sold-out event. Event promoters expect the Cirque event to sell out as well. Weston Philharmonic Society is an organization of over two hundred members originally formed to support the now defunct Florida Philharmonic. Cary and Rina Keshen have been residents of Weston for over twenty two years and have been members since the beginning and as a board member Cary is part of the public relations committee. Now retired he draws on his experience from his many years in the advertising and marketing business to promote the organization. While not a musician himself Keshen s son is an accomplished musician and graduate of the Berklee College of music. Under the leadership of President Roger Landers the Weston Philharmonic Society meets monthly and works diligently to bring classical music opera and all various types of instrumental entertainment to the community. Funds raised from our events are also used to present scholarships to students studying the musical arts as well as our ongoing programs Cary added. Many of our local young people would have never had a chance to experience this cultural entertainment if our organization didn t bring this exposure. In addition to the two performances held each year at Cypress Bay sponsored by the city there are smaller intimate performances held at private homes for the membership. The City is a great partner with the Weston Philharmonic Society helping us bring these programs to the community Cary explained. Our mission is united to bring all types of music to our young people in all the different schools and to support these performances of all types. The Cirque de la Symphonie is a unique opportunity for our residents to experience a professional musical event at only twenty dollars per person which would cost up to sixty dollars at the Broward Center for Performing Arts. Tickets are only ten dollars for children eighteen years and younger. Many Weston residents are already familiar with the impressive performances of the Symphony of the Americas each year through the Weston Philharmonic Society. Cirque du Soleil is known for their exquisite artistic and imaginative entertainment. Through their unique high-energy performances the Quebecbased company stirs the imagination and evokes the senses of their audiences worldwide. Their latest joint venture Cirque de la Symphonie promises to leave audiences spellbound. Children are encouraged to don their Halloween costumes in keeping with the theme of this event. Cary urges the community to experience a magical evening of music fun and family entertainment. Members of the Weston Philharmonic Society are also eligible to attend an exclusive Meet the Maestro reception following the program. To purchase tickets call the City of Weston at (954) 389-4321. Title Sponsors s Jason & Vicki Strochak Y by Kevin Lane ou never stand as tall as when you reach down to help a child. This maxim certainly applies to golfers and sponsors who will be participating in the 9th Annual Caddyshack Revisited Golf Tournament benefiting the Davie Boys and Girls Club. This year the Strochak Family along with generously agreed to renew their Title Sponsorship. The family owns and operates Florida Auto Tag Management Group Inc. a company which has been providing private auto tag services to car dealers and consumers in Florida for more than sixty years. LIFESTYLE MAGAZINES I OCTOBER 2011 11 C Grande Oaks GM Terry Williams Jason & Vicki Strochak of & Tournament Chair Jim Norton The mission of the Boys and Girls Clubs is to enable all young people especially those who need us most to reach their full potential as productive caring responsible citizens Other main sponsors for the event include Lauderdale BMW of Pembroke Pines Comerica The Miami Dolphins The Bergeron Family Lifestyle Magazines & the Rick Case Automotive Group. Each year the tournament features a limited field in order to create a first class experience for the golfers. Norton said there are only a handful of spots left and he expects to be sold out days before the event. Golfers will be treated to valuable gifts from Titleist a continental breakfast beverages on the course and BBQ after their round of golf as well as having a chance to win a new BMW courtesy of Lauderdale BMW of Pembroke Pines with a hole in one contest on two separate par threes. Rick Case Automotive will once again sponsor a putting contest where golfers have a chance to win ten thousand dollars if they find the right stroke. Jeff Duecker Executive Vice President General Manager of Lauderdale BMW of Pembroke Pines has been an enthusiastic supporter of this golf tournament since its inception seven years ago. Like so many successful business people Jeff is a believer in giving back to the community. It is a philosophy which permeates through all the Holman family owned stores. In fact the spirit of community involvement pretty much motivates the dealerships close to three hundred employees. I ve participated in the golf tournament over the years so I have had a chance to get to know many of the organizers as well as the important work being done by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County Jeff said. His participation included getting a few foursomes donating some CEO Jason Strochak also runs the ever so popular online savings company a daily deal website which finds the best places to dine and things to do and see in the surrounding area for their members he said. The company sends members a daily e-mail with an unbeatable deal at local restaurants spas and events. Membership is free and it definitely has its advantages The company negotiates unbelievable prices so its members will say I gotta have it. When we sent our e-mail for a special deal at Bru s Room Sports Bar and Grill we expected to get requests for maybe five hundred vouchers... We were astounded when we received over five thousand requests Jason enthused. With the challenging economy we wanted to support this event in a more significant way than we have in the past Jason explained. In fact I developed a lot of great relationships over the years with people like Matt Organ and Rita and Rick Case at the Boys & Girls Clubs and of course Lifestyle Magazine Publisher & Tournament Chairman Jim Norton. Add to this the fact this is always the best golf tournament in town it is a pleasure to become the Title Sponsor. The Strochak family has stepped up in a big way to help the children of Broward County said Jim Norton. We cannot thank them enough for their generosity and philanthropic leadership and the example they set for those blessed with opportunity and success. What has become a Columbus Day Tradition the funds raised at this golf tournament will directly benefit over fifteen hundred children who attend local clubs Jim added. The event is an annual fundraiser for the two Boys & Girls Club locations in Davie The Florence A. DeGeorge Unit and the Rita & Rick Case Unit. 12 LIFESTYLE MAGAZINES I OCTOBER 2011 You never stand as tall as when you reach down to help a child prizes for the auctions and sponsoring a hole-in-one. Jeff noted he is hoping someone gets the hole-in-one as he s only awarded one in the past twenty eight years This year Jeff and BMW of Pembroke Pines continue their participation in extraordinary ways. In addition to being one of the sponsors they are also partially underwriting part of the Caddyshack Cocktail Kickoff the night before with the live and silent auction as the centerpiece complemented with great food spirits music and entertainment. Again this year the cocktail kickoff will take place the Sunday night prior to the tournament on October 9th at 5 30 P.M. at Alligator Ron Bergeron s Saloon located on US 27 in Weston. Since there s no Dolphin game we re expecting a few current and former players to show up commented Jim Norton. We realized at previous events by the time the golfers spent a day on the golf course and then attended the awards luncheon they want to go and their significant other usually did not attend so last year we proposed the kickoff the evening before and it worked out great Jeff added. Some of the items being auctioned off this year include a suite at the BankAtlantic Center for a Florida Panther s game a big-screen TV Sony Erickson Tennis Tournament Tickets a behind the bench Miami Heat Game Experience and even a six month membership to the exclusive Weston Hills Country Club. Caddyshack the 1980 movie starring Chevy Chase and Rodney Dangerfield had a local connection not the least of which was the fact the golf scenes were filmed at the Grande Oaks Golf Club. In 1979 it was known as the Rolling Hills Golf Club. The Boys & Girls Clubs of America was founded in 1860 in Connecticut to give local boys a positive alternative to the streets. Over the years the Club turned into a national movement reaching a membership of over four million boys and girls making it one of the largest youth serving agencies in the United States. In 1965 the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County joined the national organization and have grown along with the movement. There are now The Strochak Family eleven facilities with a membership of over thirteen thousand youth making it one of the largest Boys & Girls Club organizations in the nation. Providing positive programs for eleven thousand youth within our eleven Boys & Girls Clubs throughout Broward County we offer an incredible array of programs said Matt Organ Executive VP of the Boys & Girls Clubs. Our two Davie clubs the Florence DeGeorge Club and the Rick & Rita Case Club provide positive programs for over fifteen hundred youth and about three hundred daily. We provide programs in three key areas Academic Success Good Character and Citizenship and Healthy Lifestyles said Gina Christiansen Program Manager of Club Operations. Statistics show Juvenile crime drops almost fifty percent where a club is located. Each club is set in a neighborhood where schools are within walking distance. The DeGeorge unit for instance is right next to Flamingo Elementary. Although Lawrence DeGeorge passed away his family continues to be involved. Through financial contributions his legacy has been insured through renaming the club the Florence De George club. Rick and Rita Case have been involved for over twenty five years and were very instrumental in the growth of our organization from three clubs to eleven. They continue to be champions for our Boys & Girls Club members Matt pointed out. The Case s are very hands on providing their time leadership and resources. We are very fortunate to have them leading the charge for our youth. In commenting on his working with Jim tournament chair Matt said Jim is a great leader with great vision. It is his dedication to the betterment of our children which makes him an outstanding role model for children and adults alike. This is a premier event taking place at a premier golf club. The Tournament takes place at the elegant Grande Oaks Golf Club on Monday October 10TH in Davie. Check in takes place from 7 30 a.m. to 8 30 a.m. with breakfast and a putting contest. It has been front and center with its support--in both science and grants-- to provide common sense solutions to reversing overfishing pollution and other threats to the marine ecosystem. Healthy oceans are essential for life on our planet. It is our collective responsibility to conserve the marine environment and maintain the biodiversity of our oceans said Dr. Guy Harvey an internationally known marine artist and one of the world s leading marine conservationists. AEF provides services specifically catering to average to above average intelligence children and adolescents who are not being successful (or not being as successful as they should be) in traditional public and private school environments. The primary goal of the Foundation is to assist these at risk children and adolescents by generating education and support groups for social skill development academic advancement and sensory integration. Without intervention and assistance it is impossible for these children to succeed in traditional school settings. AEF was founded in 2002 by a group of parents with special needs children. Currently the organization operates three campuses in Davie Kentwood Preparatory Elementary and Kentwood Middle School Kentwood High School and Westham Academy a dropout prevention and life skills school. AEF has approximately two hundred students over all three campuses. In addition AEF operates a L.E.A.P. tutoring program. I ve gotten a reputation of looking at patients and their symptoms not just their lab values. Various types of Thyroid Hormone Resistance such as Hashimoto s Thyroiditis and the Reverse T3 Syndrome don t show up well on standardized thyroid testing. [2] Anyhow my thyroid is only one of my problems. My world changed when I went into menopause. Hot flashes and night sweats were only part of it. I thought I d lose my mind when I gained all that weight and lost half my hair. I listened intently as I was reviewing the 30-page stack of old records Shelly brought with her to this first appointment. So what did you do I clicked on one of those Google Ads I talked about before. After watching Oprah s show about bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (bHRT) I did a Google search and there they were. I should have seen the warning signs ... What do you mean Even before seeing me knowing me at all they ordered lab tests that I was forced to pay a lot of money for. I told them that I had tests just done by my Ob Gyn but they wanted to do their own. Ordering the same tests or therapies on every patient is a sure sign of assembly line medicine. I tend to think of my office as a Michelin-rated restaurant rather than a fast-food joint such as McDonalds. Pulling out one of the lab reports As I review the data your brought with you there are a few tests such as your recent EKG that I don t have to repeat but these saliva tests are essentially useless. [3 4 5] Why do you say that The other doctor had me repeat them every three months. H bHRT Pill Mill Kenneth Woliner MD This lab has different reference ranges for estradiol progesterone and other hormones whether you are pre-menopausal post-menopausal on one therapy or another or the method of drug delivery (creams patches or capsules) as well as the timing from the last dose of medication a sure sign of lack of reliability of the test [6]. It is totally inaccurate for those that take their hormones as a lozenge (a.k.a. troches). The peer-reviewed journal Clinical Chemistry states When presenting these data to their physician patients are surprised to learn that the results are practically worthless for a clinical interpretation ... physicians should therefore inform their patients of the lack of reliability of these nonapproved services [7]. Instead of giving useful data I believe this test s main use is as a dog-and-pony show to provide a revenue-stream for the doctor [8]. He was real good at that. When I did my taxes I realized I spent over 16 000 with him last year. I choked. Shocked I know I m out-of-network but even my most challenging cases don t spend a quarter of that on my services How d it get to be so much In addition to all the lab testing they had me do they prescribed hormones all sorts of them. Bi-Est Progesterone Testosterone ... Bio-identical hormones are usually less expensive than those from Walgreen s and CVS. I know of several high quality compounding pharmacies in the area that cost less than 50 month for these drugs. Oh I wanted to go to the same pharmacy my Great Dane gets her medications from but they forced me to pay them for my hormones and then had their compounding pharmacy ship it to me. That type of split-fee relationship is considered patient brokering and punishable as a third degree felony in the state of Florida [9]. Not only could a doctor lose his license he could go to jail for that But I don t see how you could have ended up with bills so high. Human Growth Hormone (hGH). Though I was there for my menopausal symptoms the doctor convinced me these injections would help me lose weight. At over 1000 per month it adds up. These practices are best characterized as deceptive untrue or fraudulent representations in or related to the practice of a profession or employing a trick or scheme in or related to the practice of a profession and exercising influence on the patient in such a manner as to exploit the patient for the purpose of financial gain. The Florida Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act reclassifies them as a felony of the second degree ranked in level 4 of the Criminal Punishment Code [10] Oh my goodness My sister is the lawyer in the family perhaps I should go back to the medicine and just get you better. Let me reassure you however I don t dispense prescription drugs in this office and I ll always allow you to use the pharmacy of your own choice for your medications supplements or whatever. I want you to be on medications you need not ones that I need to get a mark-up on. That makes me feel better. I would rather be treated like a patient needing help than a junkie that wants refills from a pill mill. [11] As I finished up my 80-minute new patient history and physical exam I put together a plan for further testing (Shelly recently had a pap smear but was due for a bone density scan) as well as therapies that ranged from behavior changes to pharmaceuticalgrade supplements and bio-identical hormones. My staff will give you a list of quality compounding pharmacies in the area to choose from. I have a feeling your dog s pharmacist is on the list. While traditional marketing communications can be effective at brand building and awareness nothing replaces referrals and in-person introductions especially if your business thrives on meeting new people and making new connections. It becomes your own social network. I m a matchmaker who is a big believer in networking. Every week I have lunch with clients peers and prospects. We discuss business opportunities and throughout the conversation I open the floor to let them tell their stories. As a true lover of people my sincere curiosity puts people at ease. They open up and tell me about their accomplishments and almost inevitably call on me to impart my ideas on how to market their businesses. Throughout life I ve become skillful at business and social matchmaking. I sense where relationships can blossom then introduce media firm focuses on traditional and online media marketing communications for local regional and national clients. The 5th Annual Glam-A-THON event to battle breast cancer is set with a series of events for this month and organizer Tammy Gail says everyone of us needs to get involved. How many of us don t know someone affected by cancer It is as real as anything you can imagine said Gail who founded the event after her own battle with breast cancer. Glam-a-Thon 5th Annual by Elie Sanford Gail says the Glam-A-THON is a celebration of women s lives and individuality which fundraises in true diva style for breast cancer research awareness and programming. Unlike most other events Glam-A-THON is a mix of fun outrageous and fashionista-centric events in Fort Lauderdale which has raised an estimated two hundred thousand dollars for the cause. Gail likens it to a huge party for women from all walks of life which embrace living and want to help others. Some are breast cancer survivors some are fighting the illness and others have known someone who has had breast cancer. Glam-A-Thon lets them fight back with style and plenty of humor. A lot of people are into breast cancer causes but they are tired of the same old same old and we approach everything so differently she said. The series of events kicks off with the Lipstick Lounge event October 6 th at the W Hotel in Fort Lauderdale. From 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. a select group of three hundred women will enjoy a red carpet worthy party complete with Cocktails 52 LIFESTYLE MAGAZINES I OCTOBER 2011 Cosmetics and Confections . The event which sells out every year features fabulous food music goody bags to go home with and a lingerie show. The featured highlight is a fashion show by Haute Couture designer Nicolas Felizola who was named the best fashion designer of Miami Fashion week in 2009. Gail says it is any fashion lover s dream come true. It is all about feeling great about yourself taking care of yourself and how to be beautiful she said. The newest addition to the Glam-A-THON line-up is the TikiChic-y Poolside After Dark event October 14th at the Hyatt Pier 66 resort in Fort Lauderdale. Gail says it will be a one-of-kind island themed party to get everyone ready to celebrate the main event of Glam-A-THON the Glam Doll Strut. On October 15th more than fifteen hundred woman will be ready to walk through Fort Lauderdale s historic District wearing their best heels and whatever else they can dream up. It is a real spectacle said Gail. Glam-A-THON is South Florida s premier pageant where the coveted crown can be bought not earned. At this event it s not about beauty and bathing suits but how much money walkers can raise. We are the only pageant where the crown can be bought. Ours are all about cash. My recent eight night cruise to the Mediterranean didn t definitively solve the issue but even with an outstanding line up of places to see it was the exceptionally luxurious Silver Spirit that made it terrific. The cruise began in Rome Civitavecchia and ended in Athens Piraeus two of the great cities of the world and certainly worth going in early or staying after the cruise. The six ports (Sorrento Palermo Valetta Corfu Zakinthos and Nafplion) all offered an assortment of things to see and do from outstanding historic sites to beaches from shopping to eating and drinking. But Silver Spirit which debuted early last year was our home base for all explorations and provided everyone with a level of accommodations dining and pampering that was certainly a cut above. First of all the size of the ship compared to the industry norm of just over two thousand guests per ship at five hundred and forty guests we were way smaller and so we were able to get into these relatively small places. In fact the only time we were in port with another ship was when we anchored off Zakinthos a charming little Greek island. Thus we were never hampered in our local explorations by thousands of other cruise guests the way it happens in the bigger ports. Second by having such a small number of guests on board (even though this is Silversea s biggest ship) the level of individualized service made for some great moments. Staff gets to know the guests relatively easily ship officers were very visible as they made their rounds and socialized along the way and after eight nights together with the youngest group of guests T by Art Sbarsky I have ever seen on a Silversea ship there was a sense of community not usually seen on a ship. Far and away the highlight of the adventure though was the dining. At night there were six restaurants from which to choose. I heard raves about Le Champagne -- French naturally -- with a tasting menu. Also with a tasting menu (well three actually to choose from) was Seishin the Japanese spot. These two have a reasonable surcharge everything else including tipping and most booze is part of the cruise fare. Yes there was an excellent main dining room with great surroundings and food options. And there was La Terrazza which was casual during the day and turned into a delicious Italian restaurant at night with a table cloth and candlelight setting and wonderful service not to mention some amazing dishes. But Silversea has also used its bigger ship to add in Stars Supper Club for an evening of dining and music and also Hot Rock where guests get to cook their own steaks and seafood on a heated stone brought to their own tables (bibs are provided). This was so much fun I did it twice. That s six restaurants. Add in the great deck bbq held one night and twenty four hour room service and I could have eaten in a different place every one of the eight nights. This cannot be done on any other luxury ship. A Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety light search and rescue team organization and disaster medical operations. Following a major disaster first responders who provide fire and medical services are not always able to meet the demands brought for services brought on by this kind of event. Although emergency services are normally available at a moment s notice disaster produce a large number of victims communication failures road blockages and other circumstances that call for an extraordinary response. CERT training provides citizens with the facts about what to expect following a major disaster in terms of immediate services and trains the in needed life saving skills with emphasis on decision making skills rescuer safety and doing the greatest good for the greatest number. They are organized into teams so that they are an extension of first responder services offering immediate help to victims until professional services arrive. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community. close connections and opportunities for Rotarians to serve above self . Upon completion of this first training class the City of Weston and the Rotary Club of Weston will make plans on how to expand this to the various neighborhoods in Weston so that CERT members will be present locally in event of a disaster. The CERT concept was developed by the Los Angeles City Fire Department in 1985. They were able to respond when an earthquake struck the area in 1987. The LAFD created the Disaster Preparedness Division with the purpose of providing further training to citizens and private and government employees. The Emergency Management Institute (EMI) and the National Fire Academy adopted and expanded the CERT materials believing them applicable to all hazards. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recognized the importance of preparing citizens. In 1993 this training was made available nationally by FEMA and since then communities in 28 States and Puerto Rico have conducted CERT training.
