As I move through life I have experienced the usual ups and downs. Over the last few years the challenges seemed to come a bit more frequently. But it appears we are turning the corner and beginning to see the positive change we have all been expecting. My most positive gain has been acquiring full ownership of Lifestyle Magazines. As the sole owner it has been a lifelong goal of mine fulfilled In addition I have been blessed with a fantastic mother to my son and sometimes to me. The Dave Barnes song God Gave Me You is an appropriate dedication to both Candy and my mother this Mother s Day. The song should be God Gave Me Two because I have two extraordinary women constantly pulling for me and sometimes pushing me to achieve more than I could ever imagine. Since I was the first in my family to graduate from college then went on to earn my MBA this quote has always been a symbolic compass for me through the years. A committee sorts through the nominations looking for those who best represent those who go above and beyond for the children in our community. They are all unsung heroes because they are not necessarily easily recognizable in the community but what they do in the community has a great impact said Ferre-Kosar. One mother of the year honoree is Joanna Sheinberg of Weston. The mother of five boasts an endless list of service hours for different charities. They include the YMCA The Boys and Girls Club Kids in Distress and she sits on the Board of the Alexander Henry Epilepsy Foundation. She also runs the Ultimate Sports Institute which benefits the YMCA. Recently Children s Harbor has also become a passion. She and others plan to harvest an organic garden on the Children s Harbor property. Building the organic garden is helping the YMCA with their initiative to fight childhood obesity and gives the foster children a therapeutic outlet. She is an active volunteer and Board member of the YMCA of Broward County. She and her husband named the YMCA building known as the Sheinberg YMCA . She is also an active volunteer at her children s schools. It is an honor to be recognized by such an amazing organization. My hope is for my children to live their lives with their hearts always reaching out to give of themselves and then their lives will be truly fulfilled Sheinberg said. It was founded in honor of their son Ian who lost his battle with cancer in 2006 after bravely enduring a difficult chemotherapy treatment. Elise Gates has chaired the Tiara Ball for Royal Dames of Cancer research and is a member of the American Counseling Association The executive board of Royal Dames of Cancer Research the UFO at University School Broward county Humane Society and Coral Ridge Country Club. Susan Farver is the Founding Director and President of Kids Have Rights a South Florida nonprofit that advocates and supports to ensure children who are at risk abandoned endangered or involved with Foster Care or dependency system. She is also a Director and Treasurer of End Childhood Hunger. She is a member and advisor to the Kinship Council. Amy Stolberg volunteers and chaired the KOLOT voices Domestic Violence Awareness Luncheon which benefits victims of abuse at Jewish Family Services. The Father of the Year goes to Dr. Eric Stelnicki a Pediatric and craniofacial Plastic Surgeon. He started Facing it Together a nonprofit organization with a mission to improve the lives of children with craniofacial disorders resulting from birth disease or trauma. Facing It Together provides funding for medical services not covered by insurance helps families in need through a support network and is dedicated to funding advanced research on the treatment and prevention of craniofacial disorders. The Grandmother of the Year is Jackie Merck a single grandmother of three who all reside with her. She is a loving grandmother who manages many obstacles on her own including a four year old grandchild battling Leukemia. She also volunteers for Forever Families Bella s Group and the Children s Leukemia Society. The Guardian Angels honor goes to Dinah and Dwight Stephenson. Since his football career Dwight created the Computer for Kids Program to ensure every child has a computer to assist them in their education. Donated computers are refurbished and given to needy children in underserved communities. Dinah is on the Community Leadership Board of the American Diabetes Association and the Association Board of Directors for the YMCA of Broward County. They co-founded the Dwight Stephenson Foundation which combines sports and business connections they have made over the years in an effort to generate increased funding for charities which support the needs of children and families. Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies Coalition of Broward County Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing infant deaths by providing resources and education to pregnant women teens parents and their families. For more than twenty years they have been a community leader in providing services including access to prenatal care education advocacy and public awareness for all families in Broward County but most especially for those who are unable to afford private care. Among some of what they do help reduce infant mortality by providing appropriate sleeping environments for babies and education for parents on SIDS Back to Sleep and Shaken Baby Syndrome provide counseling to alleviate maternal depression for pregnant women and mothers with children ages zero to two years of age supports families by reducing risk factors that place pregnant women and infants in jeopardy for poor pregnancy and birth outcomes assists families by improving parentchild interactions in order to reduce child abuse and assists teen mothers in particular in finishing school learning life and parenting skills preparing for employment and preventing subsequent teen pregnancies helps reduce infant fetal mortality through an understanding of the occurrence of deaths in the community provide bereavement counseling as well as financial resources for those who cannot afford burial costs and provide appropriate referrals to community providers. The ALS Recovery Fund like most charitable organizations was conceived over ten years ago out of the desperation Kevin Packman felt along with ailing father Bruce who has since passed away. Father and son were on a desperate quest for a cure information resources and research however they were continuously encountering enormous voids in the ALS community. This inspired The ALS Recovery Fund. Shortly thereafter an old high school friend and Weston resident Adam Silverman s mother was diagnosed along with another acquaintance Donna Singer whose husband was also afflicted and both reached out to Kevin. Fast forward Kevin is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Weston resident Adam Silverman the President and Donna Singer the Executive Vice President. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis ALS better known as Lou Gehrig s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. According to the ALSA Association fifteen new cases a day are diagnosed with this cruel and equal opportunity disease. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS patients eventually leads to their death. That is a little over fifty six hundred people in the U.S and estimated thirty thousand Americans have the disease at any given time. We are actually the only ALS organization in the U.S. which does this says President Silverman. The University Of Miami Miller School Of Medicine is one of the leading medical institutions for ALS Research. The recovery fund recently completed its funding obligation of one million dollars for an endowed chair in ALS Research at the University. The ALS Recovery Fund is run entirely on volunteers. After many injuries in sports Kurt decided to take the TV route and the rest is history. Majoring in television production at Florida International University Kurt was able to make some priceless contacts in the industry. In the beginning he worked with CBS 4 News and UPN 33 News as a studio technician operating robotic cameras and all the basic responsibilities for a TV studio. After a few short months Kurt was discovered by the Miami Heat and hired instantly for Game Day filming. That was seven seasons ago and Kurt has had the pleasure of being there for many exciting moments including the NBA Championships where he boasts about his own championship ring. With a love for baseball a contact was made with the Marlins and the Dolphins soon followed and he became the Game Day and sidelines videographer for them. For the first three years he was the Associate Head Coach. In 2008 he took over as the head coach. Adam was named the Sun-Sentinel Broward County Coach of the Year in both 2010 and 2011. He was also named the Florida Dairy Farmers Class 2A State Coach of the Year this year. To be selected as the Broward County Coach of the Year and Class 2A State Coach of the Year is tremendously humbling. To be singled out and recognized amongst all of those very accomplished coaches it is a great honor and something I will always cherish When asked how he felt when his team won the state championship Adam said The moment the buzzer sounded at the championship game and our kids stormed on to the floor it was surreal. Our kids worked so hard and really deserved the opportunity to be champions. Watching them celebrate on the floor in our locker room and then with their parents was incredibly rewarding and satisfying. As he was addressing his team in the locker room after the game he told his players that we would be doing ourselves a huge disservice if they did not take a few seconds to reflect on what it took to accomplish something like this. It was a great life lesson and it showed our kids when a group of talented people get together individually sacrifice for the greater good of the group and work extremely hard anything is possible. The opportunity to address our team after winning the game was my most memorable and gratifying moment in my sports career. As a coach Adam loves goals. We now have two goals. First we want every player in our program to have the opportunity to play college basketball. Second we want to compete for state championships. We try to keep it simple because our kids know that in order for both of those goals to happen they need to work really hard. Adam grew up in Weston graduating from Western High School in 1996. He accepted a baseball scholarship to the University of Maryland where he graduated in 2000.
