But critically soon we hope to recommence our official inhospital support program within the Sydney Children s hospital network. This program will recommence in non-clinical areas as part of a newly produced memorandum of understanding for third party organisations. We will widely circulate the new details once confirmed. Currently we are providing limited service from the Kids Korner caf . At this point last year we discussed the priorities that were endorsed by our members. We are delighted to have met these commitments through delivery of (i) our most successful family camp which was complemented by a second regional camp as part of our escape program (ii) employing a full time Head of Family Support who is overseeing the expansion plans we have underway allowing us to deliver even more support to our members in a more strategic way and (iii) we have doubled our commitment to research and hospital support this year having delivered 100K of funding to local researchers and clinicians for ground breaking cardiac research projects. This success has of course been complemented by many other programs including the delivery of a play group program our education program HeartsClass (see page 11) and the soon to be launched regional program HeartsLocal focused on information and financial assistance directly to our regional members. As we look forward we are committed to embedding and enhancing our current programs providing hope by continuing research funding and focusing on our new hospital to home priority with investment through in-hospital social work local community professional outreach and finally in extra regional officers. As you know HeartKids relies heavily on our generous donors and fundraisers to ensure our programs continue. This issue highlights some recent events that have made a big contribution and a very big thank you to you all. And in recent weeks we celebrate the generosity of the Dedes group through HeartFelt desserts and thank our Regional officer Mardi Aplin with the success of the Orange Ball. If you would like to help we encourage our supporters to participate in one or more of the wonderful fundraising opportunities including the City to Surf the Tiny Tickers Ball and our Cuppa for HeartKids campaign all of which are coming soon As I close this quarter recently Jayne Blake (HKNSW board member) and I were delighted to accept the prestigious Benefactor Award from The Children s Hospital Westmead in recognition of our investment of over 250 00 in research the purchase of equipment enhancing services and providing family focused care. Barney Bedelis once again held the Northern Beaches Car & Bike Fest in February and raised close to 9 000. James & Amanda Williamson from Millhaven Financial Services hosted their annual Charity Golf Day at Oatlands Golf Course in March. HeartKids Newsletter Issue 1 5 NSW Family Camp 2015 HeartKids NSW hosted our 10th Annual Family camp in March at the Myuna Bay Sport and Recreation Camp. This year we had a record 49 families including Heart Angel families who also spent the weekend with us. The weather was great and we had an action packed weekend. Acting on feedback from last year s camp we had organised loads of activities for the under 6s to do with a mobile farm pony rides jumping castle and a very talented face painter keeping the littlies entertained whilst their older siblings and some mums and dads went on the flying fox giant swing tough mudder course mountain bikes and kayaking. We had a disco after dinner with the entertainer also doing balloon animals to the delight of the kids. Sunday was a leisure day with no formal activities planned but the pool basketball court tennis court bush trails playground mini golf beach soccer court and the fishing lake all got a good workout before families packed up and left for home after lunch. HeartKids Family Camp is an opportunity for families to meet to connect and to share their stories it is a chance for siblings to meet and talk about having a brother or sister who is a heart kid for dads to be able to talk to another bloke about being a heart dad for mums to share and meet other mums and critically for heart kids to see they are not alone. We have already locked in Myuna Bay for our 2016 camp Friday 01st April to Sunday 03rd April and we aim to make it bigger and better than 2015. Please register your interest at mail heartkidsnsw.org.au 6 HeartKids Newsletter Issue 1 Mother s Day The Children s Hospital Westmead HeartKids NSW recently hosted our 6th annual Mum s Pamper Day at The Children s Hospital at Westmead. Heart parents and grandparents enjoyed a day of pampering from students of The Australasian College Broadway. Hair was straightened curled and blow waved and manicures and makeup was artfully applied to make the mums feel special and to give them a small break from the medical atmosphere at their child s bedside. A lovely morning tea of cupcakes and cake pops were supplied by Cake Angels. We received some very positive feedback at the end of the day with everyone enjoying their few hours of relaxation and for a short time away from the stress our families endure when they have a child in hospital. HeartKids would like to thank The Children s Hospital at Westmead students and teachers of the Australasian College Broadway and Gabbi Armstrong from Cake Angels and their wonderful cupcake volunteers for helping make our Mum s Pamper day such a success. North Sydney Six of our lucky Heart Mums were given a morning of pampering by the students from the beauty department of North Sydney Institute St Leonards. Mums came from Sydney and regional areas to attend this special morning. Our Mums were treated to a new hair style make-up and manicure followed by a delicious morning tea. Each Mum took home flowers and a gift bag. At the end of the morning our Mums left feeling relaxed refreshed and looking beautiful. He is our Hero and has taught us more about bravery resilience strength and overcoming adversity than any other person we ve ever known. He is only 18 months young but has endured more than most would have to undertake in their entire lives. gave us some information to consider regarding long term effects on both Levi and the family. Glen and I were shellshocked by both the diagnosis and the doctor s lack of compassion. We did not want to accept this news and Glen suggested we receive a second opinion from doctors in Sydney. We contacted the Heart Centre at Westmead faxed through the cardiologist s diagnosis and were told that Dr Stephen Cooper would be able to see us so we flew to Sydney and held on tightly to the hope of a different prognosis. When we met Dr Cooper we were immediately put at ease by his genuine care for his patients and their families. He explained that Levi s heart condition meant a difficult journey ahead as he will someday pass away from heart failure and that some parents find it harder to say goodbye to their children later so choose not to go ahead with the operations. However Dr. Cooper then He is our Hero and has taught us more about bravery resilience strength and overcoming adversity than any other person we ve ever known Glen and I were living in Singapore when we were told at our 12 week scan that our pregnancy was not going to run smoothly. Tests showed that Levi could have cardiac issues and this was later confirmed at our 20 week ultrasound by a paediatric cardiologist who did not give us much hope. Levi was diagnosed with a very severe and complex cardiac condition. We were so devastated at this news as we had recently lost our first daughter Angel at 32 weeks pregnant and wanted more than anything to bring a child into our loving family. The cardiologist then described the 3 surgeries that Levi would require and We are and will be eternally grateful that Levi continues to be under his care. Levi had corrective surgery at 1 day old and open heart surgery at 4 months and has fought like a superhuman the whole time keeping up with all the other healthy babies his age. He has another planned surgery at 3 years old and loves to show us that there is no stopping him He loves riding his bike running on the grass figuring out the mechanics of the Wheel telling stories patting animals singing and giving the sweetest kisses and cuddles. We love waking up hearing him practicing his dialogue that grows daily. HeartKids have been an immense support to us during our entire journey. . ...fought like a superhuman the whole time went on to tell us that he has helped other kids like Levi and they are able to have a normal quality of life playing sports and do fairly well at school. We felt like Dr Cooper had given us that glimmer of hope that we had been aching for and asked for him to help us. Thank you so much HeartKids for being there for us and for all the other extremely brave heart kids that show us what life is really about. 10 HeartKids Newsletter Issue 1 world of difference to a little heart in need The Heart Champions Regular Giving Program is a simple yet effective way to provide little as 2 a week can make a Heart Disease As lasting care and support to children with Childhood and the families who cherish them. HeartClass for Kids is a web-based educational platform targeted to classmates of K-6 school-aged children living with Childhood Heart Disease. The interactive website follows the story of Henry HeartKids (pictured) who loves AFL naturally he barracks for the Swans - but is unable to play because of his condition. The playful lessons not only teach kids about their heart they also encourage classmates to brainstorm ways they can include and connect with their heart kid peer even when he or she is absent from school or unable to participate. Footy is great way for kids to develop important social skills such as cooperation and mateship Jarrad says but many kids with CHD are medically restricted from playing. HeartClass for Kids demonstrates that even if they re not actively on the field kids with CHD can still get involved in a meaningful way. It s absolutely vital that children with a heart condition grow up with a healthy self esteem adds Jarrad. I m really excited about being involved with this project as it has been designed to make sure that kids with CHD aren t forgotten on the sidelines and that their unique contribution is recognised and valued. For more information or to register for HeartClass for Kids please visit www.heartclassforkids.com.au Have you updated your current details with us Please send any amendments to mail heartkidsnsw.org.au so we can update our records. The Higgins Family in loving memory of Daniel The Jensen-Paag family in loving memory of Jeffrey Heart Angels Grief I had my own notion of grief. I thought it was the sad time That followed the death of someone you love. And you had to push through it To get to the other side. But I m learning that there is no other side. There is no pushing through. But rather There is absorption. Adjustment. Acceptance. And grief is not something you complete But rather you endure. Grief is not a task to finish And move on But an element of yourself An alteration of your being. A new way of seeing. A new definition of self. By Gwen Flowers Written in loving memory of Skyler Jordan Hannah Hope and Nicholas Caring Hearts Program I just wanted to say thank you so much for contributing to my bereavement counselling. It really helped towards the costly bill and enabled me to continue seeing my counsellor until the 1st anniversary of my daughter s passing. Thank you HeartKids for providing such a fantastic and helpful service. It really meant the world to me. - Melanie Taylor mum to Heart Angel Alice Grace Taylor Feeling overwhelmed need someone to talk to As you know we have our amazing FSC staff but if you need professional support we have financial assistance to make this affordable for you. HeartKids understands that stress is common in daily life but exposure to prolonged stress can start to affect your mental and physical health. Whatever the cause there are simple steps that can help reduce or manage stress such as maintaining a healthy lifestyle including healthy eating regular exercise enough sleep and avoiding harmful levels of alcohol and other drugs. But sometimes additional help is required especially when faced with a diagnosis of CHD and if you think this might be necessary your GP is the best starting point. Our Caring Heart Support Program provides financial assistance for you to access professional support such as the Access to Psychological Services program (ATAPS) or Better Access to Mental Health program as recommended through your GP. It s more common than you think to take this extra step for support and when you do it s often surprising how beneficial it is. HeartKids is here to help you.
