AID & FINANCING FOR DEVELOPMENT CLIMATE JUSTICE DEBT CANCELLATION PEACE & SECURITY PUBLIC ACCOUNTABILITY & JUST GOVERNANCE TRADE JUSTICE WOMEN S RIGHTS & GENDER JUSTICE ABOUT THE MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) form a blueprint with measurable targets and clear deadlines agreed to by all the world s countries and the world s leading development institutions. They have galvanised unprecedented efforts to meet the needs of the world s poorest. BACKGROUND In September 2000 building upon a decade of major United Nations conferences and summits world leaders came together at United Nations Headquarters in New York to adopt the United Nations Millennium Declaration committing their nations to a new global partnership to reduce extreme poverty and setting out a series of time-bound targets with a deadline of 2015. We recognise that in addition to our separate responsibilities to our individual societies we have a collective responsibility to uphold the principles of human dignity equality and equity at the global level. As leaders we have a duty therefore to all the world s people especially the most vulnerable and in particular the children of the world to whom the future belongs. United Nations Millennium Declaration WHAT S DIFFERENT THIS TIME 01 02 03 04 Poorer countries pledged to improve policies and governance and increase accountability to their own citizens wealthy countries pledged to provide the resources. Everyone s onboard 900 billion was invested in arms by governments in 2003 alone and not more than about 50 billion of additional aid per year is needed to meet the Goals. In the grand scheme of things the change is relatively small. We can afford it The goals are not just lofty statements of intent precise monitoring mechanisms have been put in place by the UN individual governments and international civil society organisations. We re monitoring our progress Some have even argued that they are not in fact millennium but minimum development goals. Setting the bar any lower would be morally unacceptable. Individual goals have already been achieved by many countries in the space of only 10-15 years. The goals are achievable This booklet contains a list of suggested projects and organisations that members may wish to support. However the list is not exhaustive and there are many groups working toward making the MDGs happen.
