There are many aspects of life which begin to flourish as well as new initiatives to be undertaken. As we begin the second quarter of the year my hope for you is for your year to bring you fulfillment and meaning. This is the month for Opening Day the beginning of a new Major League Baseball season. This signals the generational feeling of rebirth for many so much so the writer Thomas Boswell wrote the book titled Why Time Begins on Opening Day. Many feel this occasion is a chance to forget last season because thirty major league clubs and their millions of fans begin with 0-0 record. Let s Go Marlins Hailing from Pennsylvania I am reminded of the words of William Penn I expect to pass through this life but once so if there be any kindness I can show or any good thing I can do to any fellow being let me do it now and not defer or neglect it as I shall not pass this way again. So if you have not attached yourself to a cause or if you are looking to volunteer there are many opportunities to make a difference right here in our community. I encourage you to seek out a worthwhile way to take action before the year passes by. Speaking of making a difference this month marks the annual Weston Relay for Life event. I hope you will be a part of this major fundraiser in our community. Please join in and celebrate life while also fighting back against cancer. The 2011 Relay for Life is an event where adults and children can find a way to give back to the community as well as honoring the fighters and survivors of this disease. There are other events taking place where you can make a difference. We also have articles on residents who are doing their part as well as the monthly Dining and Lifestyle Advice columns in addition to the Scene Pages for you to enjoy. Lastly please keep our Japanese friends in mind with prayers and resources as they recover from last month s earthquake. They are a resilient people and will surely rebuild stronger. RELAYFOR LIFEWeston of Celebrate Remember Fight Back by Art Sbarsky T he 2011 Relay For Life of Weston is all set for April 16 17 at Cypress Bay High School. This overnight event is one of five thousand Relays held every year across the country and the world. These community-based Relay events have become the American Cancer Society s signature fundraiser since it was created back in 1985 by Dr. Gordy Klatt in Tacoma Washington. This will be the ninth annual Relay here in Weston and it certainly has become an important home-town charity event having raised over one million dollars through 2010. Mayor Hersh and the City of Weston Commissioners have proclaimed April 16th & 17th Relay For Life of Weston Weekend in the City of Weston. Heading up the event committee again this year will be Ross Sabath as Event Chair and Joy Medrano as Event Vice Team Development Chair. Describing Relay Ross says Every Relay is an emotional roller coaster. From the opening Survivor lap to the luminaria ceremony there are so many amazing moments. Last year was especially memorable for me as I was able to see how all the countless hours of hard work that the committee and volunteers put in paid off. I truly enjoy walking around the track looking at the messages and pictures on all the luminaria bags. You get a real understanding of how many people in your own community have been touched by this disease. LIFESTYLE MAGAZINES I APRIL 2011 11 main goals this year is to bring Relay awareness to the community of Weston. Joy and Ross are now Weston Relay veterans. Ross got involved for the first time in 2004 saying I heard about Relay at work. My company Ultimate Software who is our lead sponsor this year formed a team in my honor. After finishing my last treatment of chemo in January I walked in my first Relay two months later. I ve been involved ever since. The opening Survivor lap was one of the most emotional moments in my life. I realized then and there that I never wanted to miss Relay again. Joy says My first Relay was in 2008 at Weston Regional Park as a team captain. I had no idea what to expect at that point but I can tell you that since that first event I am hooked for life on Relay For Life. I was the team captain for my team once again in 2009. Like so many others Joy and Ross took this team involvement very personally and it also led them to deeper involvement in organizing the Weston Relays in recent years. Ross was the Accounting Chair for two years and has now been the Event Chair the last two. As for Joy after the 2009 event I was approached by our American Cancer Society Community Representative and asked to be part of the Weston Relay committee for the 2010 event. I was truly honored but nervous at the time because I knew that the committee would be brand new and I had no idea what to expect in planning such an amazing event. I was brought in as Team Development Chair. Joy was eventually asked by Ross to be the Event Vice Chair. 12 LIFESTYLE MAGAZINES I APRIL 2011 D Anthony Russo Dr. Elizabeth Stone Ross Sabath and Cathy & James Donnelly Ross and Joy know well the dreaded disease cancer which strikes fear in the hearts and minds of everyone who even hears it. They share the goal of one day seeing it eradicated from our lives. Ross is a survivor of testicular cancer having been diagnosed with Testicular Cancer - Stage II Nonseminomas Germ Cell Tumor in 2003. He says I started to feel a pain in my groin area. Within a couple of days it became extremely painful (I remember it being too painful to have my one year old son sit on my lap). I called my Urologist and told the nurse my symptoms and she said to come in right away. I didn t know what to expect from the visit. I was hoping he was going to say I only needed surgery and that would be the end of it. Instead he says to me as if we were talking about the weather it s a tumor. My heart dropped to my feet and my mind was spinning out of control. He told me that I needed to have surgery the next morning. I left there dazed and confused. As I was on my way for a CT scan I called my wife at her office and told her the news. I think she was in shock as well. I remember thinking before I called her how do you tell someone you have cancer I couldn t even comprehend it myself. I got the CT scan (one of the many undesirable activities I would endure on this journey) and then went back to work. The rest of the day was a blur. Ross ultimately went through a Left Inguinal Orchiectomy and three months of chemotherapy. He s been cancer-free for the last seven years. Ross and his wife Beth have lived in Weston for fourteen years and have three sons Jeffrey Gavin & Daniel who they refer to as their miracle baby since he was conceived and born after Ross went through his cancer ordeal. Joy s parents have survived cancer TWICE EACH Her mom Elsia was diagnosed with Fallopian Tube Cancer Stage 1C at fifty seven. Describing what she is looking for this year Joy says Last year our Relay came in at 1 in Broward County and number fifteen in the state of Florida raising over one hundred and sixty eight thousand dollars. I can t wait to see what the end result will be for this year s event I know we will be successful but one of our It s a wonderful family event which helps us come together as one She had classic symptoms of Ovarian Cancer abdominal pain extreme exhaustion rapid weight loss and a swollen belly. Water surrounding the ovaries was her initial diagnosis until the pathology report came back with the cancer which was contained in the fallopian tubes. She was in remission after six months of chemo at Memorial Regional West. Unfortunately there was a recurrence with a tumor in the lymphatic chest area in 2007. This was non-operable and she started another six for RFL. It s very rewarding to know that all the hard work that s been put into planning the event educating our teams and spreading the Relay message will make a difference in so many lives. Joy says Never give up have faith and hope and sums up her feeling about Relay saying It s such a wonderful family event which helps us come together as one to fight against a disease that turns lives upside down in one instant I have made some unbelievable friendships Relay For Life offers such a comfort to those who are walking in the shoes of battling cancer and know that they are not alone in their fight The survivors who are in remission currently offer such a sense of HOPE to those currently battling this disease. It also offers us the sense of closure as we honor our loved ones that we have lost to cancer. Relay offers so much to everyone and it brings the community together for one unbelievable cause to find a cure Ross invites everyone to the April 16th & 17th event saying If you ve never been to Relay please come on out. Whether it s only for five minutes one hour or to stay overnight. I guarantee that once you ve been to Relay you ll never want to miss it again. For more detailed information regarding Relay For Life of Weston please contact Ross Sabath Event Chair at 954-309-6321 or westonrelayforlife comcast.net. For more information on cancer call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345 available twenty-four hours a day seven days a week or visit www.cancer.org. LM months of chemotherapy. Elsia is currently in remission and will take daily chemo pills for the rest of her life. Joy s dad Bill was sixty three when a bleeding mole was determined to be a melanoma. He underwent Surgery to remove the cancerous area and lymph nodes. No chemo or radiation was needed. The result was remission but a year later he had another surgery on his arm to remove another melanoma. Ross has a deeply-felt first-hand message to those who are told they have cancer Life isn t over. It s just another challenge that life throws at you. I stayed positive from day one. Never once did I think I wasn t going to beat this disease. It s important to have a great support system. I had that in my family my wife Beth in particular. I really don t know how she did it. Between taking care of the kids the house the dogs going to work -- unbelievable. There really are so many people to thank who helped me throughout my treatment and recovery journey. I hope they know how much I appreciate each of them. And naturally as part of his dedication to the Weston Relay he says I ve learned so much and met so many wonderful people through volunteering Ross Sabath and Joy Medrano LIFESTYLE MAGAZINES I APRIL 2011 13 The Local Bank That s Truly Local. And now that I have been to Canyon Ranch Miami Beach I have a new favorite. My husband Howard and I checked into Canyon Ranch Hotel and Spa in Miami Beach a luxurious condominium-hotel at Collins Avenue and 68th Street. Our spacious oceanfront suite could have been our new home there are residences here as we soon found out that week. But first we wanted to experience Canyon Ranch. Canyon Ranch brings together all the elements of a healthy lifestyle to strengthen the mind body and spirit in a resort environment. Founders Enid and Mel Zuckerman believe that people can live longer healthier and more meaningful lives through an active healthy lifestyle. Howard and I embraced that philosophy the first day as we sampled several fitness and meditation classes that run from dawn to sunset. We began with a beach circuit class that combined outdoor exercises and a brisk walk down the boardwalk against the backdrop of the rising sun and refreshing Atlantic breeze. Next we gave Pilates a whirl. Howard and I are both athletic but Pilates with its repetitions and controlled core challenges was new to us. Our trainer was patient and persistent encouraging us to do only what felt right. We worked muscles we never knew we had. For the next act Howard and I split up. I went to the Gotta Dance class an uptempo musical exercise routine and Howard had a fabulous Kinesis workout on high-tech equipment that helps burn 30 percent more calories than a regular resistance circuit. After our fitness exploration we met at the Aquavana spa where we relaxed in the Herbal Laconium a room filled with warm moist air and infused with fresh herbs. We followed this blissful spa treatment -- on a dare with a fiveminute blast in the Igloo. The chilly menthol mint and eucalyptus mists were exhilarating With three classes and two spa treatments behind us we were ravenous for lunch so we walked to the ocean-view Canyon Ranch Grill. There we indulged in a mahi mahi sandwich unlike any we lifelong Florida residents had ever tasted. We also relished a turkey Rueben and a Cobb salad nutritious and delicious versions of the old favorites we were craving. The restaurant provides nutritional information for every item on its allorganic menu. We felt no guilt and only pleasure indulging in the 90-calorie baked artichoke fries that were lightly sprinkled with parmesan cheese and garlic salt. When the day ended we were conflicted about whether to pick up the pace or slow things down and stay close to home. Stay in Miami Beach Or head a few minutes down the street to South Beach The hotel s concierge Collin offered us what turned out to be the perfect end to the day the newly renovated -- and exquisitely hip -- Carillon Lounge on the property. This new venue right off the lobby offers organic biodynamic wines and other all-natural alcoholic beverages. Our two-day stay was a dream. There is no doubt we would love to spend every day this way which in fact is very doable. Owners residents of the on-site condominiums have access to the spa classes lectures oceanfront pools and facilities year round. And nearly one-third of those women experience the severe and debilitating symptoms. Unfortunately many women don t know that they have fibroids and accept painful symptoms as a normal part of life. Cleveland Clinic interventional radiologist Rodolfo J. Blandon MD answers some important questions about uterine fibroids and discusses innovative treatments. C Treatment Options Anemia and fatigue Painful intercourse Frequent urge to urinate Constipation or bloating Enlarged stomach area Innovative Rodolfo J. Blandon Md Cleveland Clinic Interventional Radiologist For Uterine Fibroids Q What are the symptoms of fibroids A Fibroids generally occur without symptoms. In most cases they are discovered in routine pelvic exams. When symptoms are present they may include Heavy prolonged monthly periods sometimes with clots Q What is UFE and how is it performed A UFE is a minimally invasive procedure that blocks the blood supply to fibroids. The procedure requires only a small nick in the skin and lasts less than an hour. An interventional radiologist inserts a catheter (thin tube) into an artery in the groin then uses X-ray imaging to guide it to the uterine artery. Tiny round particles are injected into the arteries that supply the fibroids. They block blood flow which decreases bleeding and causes the fibroids to shrink. The particles remain permanently at the fibroid site. The process is repeated in your other uterine artery for complete blockage of blood to the fibroids. UFE is clinically proven to reduce the major symptoms of fibroids including pain excessive and prolonged bleeding and frequent urination. If you are experiencing symptoms related to uterine fibroids your doctor can investigate further with imaging studies such as ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Cleveland Clinic utilizes the most advanced technology available in the diagnosis and treatment of uterine fibroids. To schedule an appointment with a Cleveland Clinic physician specializing in uterine fibroids call 1-800-639-DOCTOR. Pain or pressure in the pelvis Q What are fibroids and whom do they affect A Fibroids are benign growths in the uterus. They range from a few millimeters to many centimeters in size. AfricanAmerican women and those with a family history are more likely to develop fibroids. Q What are the treatment options A Medical treatments include birth control pills and hormone treatments. Medications can cause menopause-like side effects and are prescribed to alleviate symptoms. Surgical options include hysterectomy which is the removal of the uterus and myomectomy the removal of just the fibroids. While these options are generally effective they require general anesthesia and a longer recovery period. Surgeries also carry risk of complications. A new option is uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) a minimally invasive procedure that preserves the uterus and greatly reduces recovery times compared to traditional surgical procedures. Rodolfo J. Money is tight cut-backs are painful and it gets increasingly harder to do more with less. Where organizations differ is that they have the power of the collective. Single people may rely on their own income families often have two incomes and sometimes a third if someone is working two jobs. Organizations however can harness the energy of many people and tap into the community. But it s important that they get a response. You like most people in this community have likely been asked to contribute to many many organizations all worthy. N Eric B. Stillman President and CEO Jewish Federation of Broward County Hopefully you have selected several to support. When you make that decision you are working with others who have also made that decision and your contribution becomes even more valuable as a result. It is essential for the survival of non-profit organizations that do so much for a community in need that those who can give do give. Because there are others giving to a cause is not a reason to say no it s a reason to say yes Because by working together with others the power to accomplish important goals is far more possible. As the familiar expression goes the sum of the parts surpasses the whole. Marketing experts rely on a concept called volume sales. Costco and Sam s Club exist on this very basis. Buying multiple quantities of an item reduces the cost per item. Ultimately you get more for less. The same theory holds true for charities they can do more get more achieve more with more support. That s why is imperative that even if you know that a neighbor friend or colleague gives to a cause consider giving as well. You ll give that organization the ability to do even more. The Jewish Federation of Broward County has an annual day of service known as Tikkun Olam which means repair the world. Hundreds of people from across the Broward Jewish community showed up on a recent Sunday morning to help out at the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center. If half of the volunteers never came our accomplishments would have been less than half. We did far more in improving the facility providing essential supplies creating an infant pantry and offering food for the homeless because we had so many people participating. Ibby and Sammy Schulman have been supporters of the Jewish Federation of Broward County for many years. They understand the power of giving together and have brought many friends and associates to the Federation because they understand that the combined efforts make an even bigger difference. We believe in the concept of Tikkun Olam and we are so proud of the work of the Federation and its beneficiary agencies said Ibby Schulman. We understand that it is the responsibility of Jews who are able to make a difference to support those less fortunate here and Israel. If not who will do it Giving money giving your time giving your expertise makes an impact. Giving with others makes a bigger one and shows the power of the collective. Eric B. It s just an expensive placebo but I guess enough time has gone by for a whole new generation to fall prey to this scam again [6]. Louisiana has already made it illegal to use hCG for weight loss and the Florida Board of Medicine would discipline any physician they knew that prevented his patients from using a pharmacy of their own choice [7 8]. Actually they re already out of business. Even though hCG is a potentially dangerous medication they were selling it without a doctor s prescription. The Palm Beach County Sheriff s office charged the clinic owner with a 3rd degree felony for practicing medicine without a license. It s a scary world out there. This one hundred and twenty bed facility has designated sixty of its beds specifically for dementia residents. The Alexander Sandy Nininger State Veteran s Nursing Home residents who gave so much now have the liberty to enjoy a beautiful and peaceful outdoor environment as part of their home thanks to DynaServ and the Rotary Club of Weston. It is fitting that this liberty might be enjoyed by those who gave so much to protect the liberties that we all share. Rotarian Claudia Mosley s great respect for what Veterans have done and her interest in this facility led her to a vision of how to thank the Veterans community and these residents specifically by making their environment more beautiful and more comfortable. She was inspired by the spirit and dedication of Oscar Luis Correale CTRS Director Recreation Therapy. The facility offered no attractive outdoor area for its residents who deal with many challenges. The property surrounding the building suffered from erosion had no landscaping and was poorly drained. There was no convenient place for residents to enjoy Florida s outdoors. She proposed that her Rotary Club sponsor a drainage and landscaping project which would also provide a park like outdoor setting complete with a fountain. She quickly received the club s support and financial commitment. The Rotary Club of Weston sought and received help from its Rotary District. Plans and budgets were prepared and landscapers were contacted. Rotary member Neal Kalis brought the project to the attention of John Reed President of DynaServ Florida Inc. one of the state s leading landscape companies. DynaServ s owner Joseph Sirotkin a WWII veteran embraced the opportunity to assist his fellow veterans. DynaServ rose to the occasion beyond all expectations. Thank you to everyone involved for allowing us the privilege of participating in this project and we hope it brings many years of joy and comfort to all the residents. Moreover DynaServ s generosity has been amplified by its commitment of funds to the Rotary Club of Weston for other community service work. Oscar Luis Correale said I want to express my gratitude for your kindness and generosity on behalf of the residents families and staff for the great things the Rotary Club Weston and DynaServ have created for us. We are most grateful for their generosity of time and effort and for our beautiful new setting. I also thank Rotarians who visit us regularly to organize activities here at the center. Tikkun Olam means repair the world in English. The Club promotes a greater understanding of Judaism to people of other religions and cultures. On April 11 members of Tikkun Olam will be joined by the Christian student group First Priority for a mock Seder (pronounced sayder ) Supper in the Heritage gymnasium. Rabbi Jacobs from Ramat Shalom will be the featured speaker. He will tell the story of Passover to the assembled members. Jenna Ellenbogan the club s secretary explains The purpose of our mock Seder is to share an important Jewish tradition with those who may not know very much about the Passover holiday and to spread the joy we experience during this holiday of remembrance. Rabbi Jacobs will explain that the Seder is a Jewish ceremonial dinner focusing on the story of the Israelites flight out of Egypt. According to the book of Exodus God expressed to the enslaved Jews in Egypt that he would free them. He said he would Smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt. A Tikkun Olam Passover. At a traditional Seder Jewish families take turns reading from the Haggadah which retells the story. Thus far in the school year students in Tikkun Olam have completed several projects to benefit their community. They planted trees for the Jewish holiday of Tu B shevat and provided 20 gifts to Jewish Adoption and Foster Care Options (JAFCO). JAFCO is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization established in 1992 to provide services to abused and neglected children in South Florida. On May 1 Tikkun Olam will present a Holocaust Memorial Service in the Heritage Main Theatre from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The service is open to the public and all are welcome to attend. Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day is observed as a commemoration of the approximately six million Jews who perished during the Holocaust and to recognize the Jewish resistance during that period. Like most memorial services throughout the world a Holocaust survivor will speak and participants will offer a prayer for the departed. A commemorative yellow candle will be lit in honor of those who lost their life during the Holocaust. I was very fortunate to spend part of my summer in RYLA then S4TL. This pushed me into an assistant district governor role for district 6990 and many wonderful experiences with Interact and Rotary. I also took on a leadership role in my senior year at Western High. The Rotary club gave the training experience and confidence to excel. On top of it all I received both a Scholarship and Student of the Month award from the Rotary Club of Weston which provided about 2 000 for my first year of college. If that wasn t enough during my first summer off from college I emailed the Weston Rotary club to see if anyone was looking to hire some short term help. I found out that Tom Cameron (former active Weston Rotarian) needed an office assistant fulltime during that summer and after an interview I had my first real job. I saved up money from that summer to help pay for my living expenses during my second year of college. That summer s work experience helped me land my first internship at Office Depot s headquarters in Delray Beach where I spent 3 summers interning thereafter. I graduated Summa Cum Laude from UCF in 2006 with a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) and found a career with Adventist Health System the second largest protestant health system in the USA as graphic designer and application specialist. It has been almost 10 years since I left Western High but I ve never once forgotten the Rotary Club of Weston. When I heard of this raffle from Ken Ruiz I figured this was the time to start paying back the kindness and generosity that helped propel me forward in my academic and professional life. I hope to count this as the first of many years where I can support the RC of Weston particularly as they support new generations of high school graduates. If you would like to support the Weston Rotary Scholarship Fund please call or email me directly and I will provide the necessary information. You can also get more information by visiting www.westonrotary.org. We meet every Thursday morning from 7 30 8 30 AM at Weston Hills Country Club for breakfast and a lively program. If you would like more information please contact me (Dan Young) at 954.336.8400 or dyoung youngconsultinggroup. com or any Weston Rotarian. And for our latest happenings be sure to check out our club website at www.WestonRotary.org and the Rotary Club of Weston Fan Page on FaceBook. I was ecstatic just as the entire team was. It just shows all of the hard work we put in finally paid off at the end of the year with a State Championship. We were even more excited and thrilled after learning of the National Championship. Being recognized by many different people is truly a blessing and we still couldn t believe that we did it again winning two National Championships in three years is something really special. Rudock took his game to another level this season when he passed for two thousand eight hundred and twenty seven yards with thirty six touchdowns and three interceptions. He was one of the most improved quarterbacks in the country recruiting analyst Tom Lemming said. He was one of the best quarterbacks in the country by year s end. He has got arm strength he has got foot speed he has got leadership skills. There s not much not to like. He s one of the premier players in the country. Jake Rudock will be attending the University of Iowa with a scholarship to play football. My goals after college are having a family and most likely entering the medical profession. I am not sure what field I will enter into it all depends on where my interest is sparked. If I had the opportunity to play football professionally I would easily grasp that opportunity. It would be an amazing opportunity and if I am lucky enough then that would be awesome. Jake also plays first base for the St. Thomas baseball team. His hobbies include going to the movies and hanging out his friends. Whether you are 35 or 85 years old the results can be dramatic providing a youthful symmetric invigorated look. Sculptra is different from the other dermal fillers in that it is not a gel or other substance that is injected to erase a specific wrinkle or fold. Sculptra works entirely by stimulating the body to create its own new collagen. When done correctly this creates a more gradual and very natural increase in facial volume which is why it is so popular among celebrities. People will comment on how great & young you look but never realize that you have had anything done because the increase and improvement although dramatic is gradual and natural. Each day that passes will result in additional collagen synthesis. You are apparently growing younger. against demineralization that so many aging women begin to have around the mouth that cause the chin to become receded and pointy. On men the jaw reduces a little due to bone loss and the cheek bones flatten. The skin is then unable to accommodate for the volume loss and drapes near the jaw.
