This month we celebrate with flowers candy romantic dinners and maybe even a special gift. For me I always devote the evening to Candy my wife and partner in life. This year we will celebrate the occasion with a new addition to our family. Last month we welcomed another Rotary Exchange Student Severin from Austria into our home. Now our son Devin has a new brother and we are learning about the traditions and lifestyle from another part of the world. The exchange program is an extension of Rotary s mission to foster world understanding and peace. Given the times in which we are living I think we can all use a little more of this kind of initiative. If only we could begin to learn more about each other and accept people for who they are maybe we can all make this world a better and more peaceful place to live in.. The Rotary theme for the upcoming year says it best- Reach Within to Embrace Humanity. Another exciting thing to cheer about is the coming together of the Dream Trio our own Miami Heat It seems when they are not hurt the three musketeers have found their rhythm. South Florida can really use a pick me up from at least one of its sports teams so let s hope the Heat is On This month s feature story is about Sheila Smith a Coral Springs resident and the CEO and President of 2-1-1 Broward a twenty-four hour helpline which is the community s central point of entry into the health and human services system. Most frequently these are to relatives spouses children and grandchildren who always deserve to be reminded of our love. Words can never adequately express our depth of feelings of devotion but it s an age old custom to remind them how much we care during this month of hearts and flowers. Special kudos to the legions of people who spend their time helping others by raising funds for worthy causes manning food kitchens or delivering meals to the elderly making a difference in the lives of children who might have been forgotten visiting the sick in both hospitals and their homes and always making time for others to have more and lead fuller lives. These unsung heroes work tirelessly year after year. We all want them to know that their efforts have not gone unnoticed. I am particularly grateful to the mentors I have had in business who taught me the importance of helping others set and reach their goals. Without them I might have made money and had a good living. Because of them many have profited and learned the difference in creating a richer and fuller lifestyle. There are people who all of us know that are almost too good to be true. They have the ability to see the bright side of all situations and create feelings of optimism in the darkest of times. We all salute you and thank you. You have been our rainbows during and after the fervor of many storms. Sometimes it s a little smile the mere meeting of eyes a nod or a touch that has made the difference. We re all familiar with the adage that speaks about everybody putting their troubles in one big pile in the middle of the floor and then having the option to select which one you want to pick. So often we would pick our own back because we never really know what heartaches others are suffering at the moment. How special the friends who let us know they care. It s incredible the good that can be done when no one cares who gets the credit. Great big thanks to those of you who stay focused on the task and don t only appear for the glory. When you thought we weren t looking we noticed your diligence unselfishness and commitment. As we start another year we wish you love and kudos and hearts and flowers monthly. Why should we single out February Let s unite in our feeling of good will and friendship continuing to take time to let others know they are appreciated. Let s create such a positive aura that it spills over into all that we do with all who we meet regardless of who notices. Writing this column is particularly meaningful to me because of those who have taken the time through the years to acknowledge my efforts and encourage my attempts at sharing. Unwilling to someday face the experience one couple decided to put their professional duties on hold and embark on their lifelong dream of an extended sailing experience. This is a personal story about Sheila and Michael Smith s three-year journey living aboard a sailboat while navigating the waters of the East Coast. Today the couple resides in Coral Springs and has since returned to working in positions dedicated to helping others. Sheila is better known in Broward County as the CEO and President of 2-1-1 Broward-- a 24 hour helpline which is the community s central point of entry into the health and human services system. So why would a Psychology graduate from Nazareth College of Rochester in Rochester New York who later worked in the same city before moving to work in the nearby city M Dedicated to Others LIFESTYLE MAGAZINES I FEBRUARY 2011 of Buffalo New York have an interest in leaving behind all the luxuries of a traditional land-based lifestyle We ve always been boaters and having grown up around the Great Lakes we always spent lots of time on the water explains Sheila who was born and raised in the Finger Lakes area of upstate New York. She and Michael who were married in 1993 are also avid scuba divers. 11 Gregory Haile & Marcia Barry-Smith he trip was something we had thought about and planned for a long time. We traveled a lot and both always embraced change and something new. We decided it was time to do something and live somewhere different she adds. In 1998 -- despite criticism from family and friends--the Smiths resigned from their upper management positions sold their house cars and possessions and purchased a sailboat in Annapolis Maryland for their at sea adventure. At the time Sheila was employed as the executive director of Hispanos Unidos de Buffalo in Buffalo New York and Michael served in the government as the Commissioner of Human Services for the City of Buffalo New York. The Smiths set sail out of the Chesapeake Bay down the coast to the Florida Keys. The Smiths lived aboard their sailboat from 1999 to 2001 with the last year living aboard while docked behind Miami s Bayside Marina. The interesting thing I learned during our trip was it puts into perspective what s important and what s not Sheila says recalling how much stuff they tossed and sold in preparation for their voyage simply because of limited space. While sailing the Smiths weathered through the natural elements and built a sense of camaraderie among each other and the new people they met along the way. It s a very different uncomplicated way of life-- an overall fabulous experience Sheila comments also sharing daughter Alia was conceived during the sailing trip and born in 1999. With a toddler in tow however the boat living lifestyle was not practical for the Smiths who decided in 2002 to move back on land. They settled in Coral Springs primarily because of the city s schools and educational programs. The city was also an easy commute for Sheila and her husband who at the time took jobs in West Palm Beach and Ft. Lauderdale respectively. Sheila dove back into familiar territory of working in non-pro t management from 2002-2005 as executive director at The Homeless 12 LIFESTYLE MAGAZINES I FEBRUARY 2011 T Coalition of Palm Beach County in West Palm Beach. Later she served as executive director of the Center of Hope also in West Palm Beach from 2005 to 2007 before moving on to the Episcopal Mental Health Ministries Inc. Pompano Beach where she worked one year as executive director. In 2008 though Sheila found the position which t her on land as perfectly as her scuba diving wetsuit does in water-- she became president and CEO of 2-1-1 Broward in Fort Lauderdale. The non-pro t organization is a twenty four hour seven days a week multi-lingual helpline offering anonymous listening support crisis suicide intervention needs assessment and information and referrals for residents of Broward County. To contact the organization people can dial 2-1-1 or (954) 537-0211. I ve always worked in non-pro t management but I started in direct services and I worked in a variety of agencies including food banks multi-service agencies and new construction Sheila says. My experience gives me a unique perspective as I make decisions. And the broad variety of experiences has come together very nicely for the position I hold now with 2-1-1 she adds. In partnership with a dynamic board of directors and a dedicated staff Smith has steered the 2-1-1 Broward organization on its mission to build and strengthen relationships increase visibility and create new partnerships with key leaders and providers. We re becoming well-established and well-known as the gateway to human services and the point of entry for anyone in the community who has a need to get information and connect with services she says. Think of 2-1-1 as your rst call for help no matter what the issue or need. Every hour of every day someone in Broward is searching for help or services whether it is related to housing food nancial assistance relief from abuse family issues depression child-care or suicide prevention. Think of But navigating the maze of city state and non-pro t agencies can more often than not be overwhelming and confusing she adds. 2-1-1as your first call for help no matter what the issue Our professional multilingual caring counselors are trained to provide listening support and talk things through with the caller to get a good sense of what s happening and connect them with the appropriate program for further assistance Sheila says noting that dialing 2-1-1 saves callers time and eliminates the frustration of otherwise having to make an average of seven phone calls in search for assistance. Currently 2-1-1 has four thousand programs offered by over seven hundred providers. The programs are classi ed under categories such as crisis and suicide intervention abuse healthcare basic needs and disaster related information. Uniquely we re one of the few organizations which actually serve potentially every single individual in Broward County Sheila says. Last year 2-1-1 took over one hundred and twenty six thousand calls up more than double the sixty thousand calls received ve years ago. Today half of the incoming calls are to inquire about basic needs information regarding food shelter rent and utility assistance and there is an increase in calls from middle class families adversely affected by the economy who are dealing with job loss and house foreclosure. The organization has a staff of forty seven employees who operate round the clock thre hundred and sixty ve days a year. Volunteers also contribute time especially to provide the service dubbed Touch Line which is a service of calls made daily to senior citizens who live alone to check on their health and well-being. By calling the general 2-1-1 line callers can speak with the answering counselor or be redirected to one of the other specialty lines. These are Touch Line the Homeless Helpline the Hotline for Children with Special Needs the Behavioral Health Hotline for Adults and Children with Mental Health and Substance Abuse Issues and TeenSpace211 a Youth Hotline and interactive website www.teenspace211.org which help youth address issues such as bullying family problems relationships. People interested in learning more about 2-1-1 Broward can visit www.211-broward.org. As the gateway to non-pro t organizations it seems natural 2-1-1 Broward will launch the BankAtlantic Non-Pro t Academy Awards on February 25th at the Signature Grand in Davie. The event is a way to recognize and bring awareness to the collective work of the non-pro ts in Broward County. All non-pro ts are encouraged to attend so they may be recognized for their contributions to our community. This event is a great t with 2-1-1 Broward s mission. In the same way 2-1-1 serves to connect Broward residents with the health and human service providers who can ful ll their needs the current Board is focused on connecting non-pro ts to each other and to business and community leaders says Gregory Haile 2-1-1 Broward board chair event cochair and attorney with Berger Singerman. Six speci c Academy Awards will be given to showcase the achievements of outstanding non-pro t organizations and individuals. The winners of the six Academy Awards will each receive one thousand dollars and up to two nominees in each category will also receive a cash award. When BankAtlantic was approached by 211 Broward to partner on this event it was an instant YES exclaims Marcia Barry-Smith executive director of BankAtlantic Foundation Sr. VP CRA Of cer and event co-chair. 211 Broward is in the business of connecting people with solutions to a wide variety of challenges and BankAtlantic Foundation funds and supports community non-pro t partners who provide these solutions. These individuals and organizations perform thankless tasks miracles - every single day. This is our chance to recognize them and say a BIG thank you adds Barry-Smith. On a bustling Sunday night with every table filled we were transformed back in time to a wonderful era of Old World Italian or as owner Anthony Bruno says We are first generation Italian-American New York style food. Upon entering the beautiful cocktail lounge you immediately feel as if you are flying in a luxury private plane. Small windows surround the room offering a view as if you are flying thousands of feet in the sky looking down at a landscape with sparkling lights. In 1982 Anthony and his father opened Runway 84 in the same location they are in today. His father has since passed away but Anthony continues to dazzle Fort Lauderdale with only the finest cuisine and service. As if inviting us into his own home we were warmly greeted by Anthony. We instantly devoured warm crusty bread while dipping into olive oil sprinkled with Parmesan cheese. Without a peek at the menu Anthony ordered for us and the food just kept on coming Our mouths watered as amazing aromas filled the air and we were off on our Italian culinary adventure. Our appetizers arrived with an assortment of tender giant shrimp francese and large meatballs in marinara sauce with a dollop of ricotta cheese...simply incredible. Tender slices of eggplant melted in our mouths and their famous mussels marinara with bread for dipping burst with flavor. Our pasta courses arrive with al-dente rigatoni T by Marla Lazarus Pomodoro with prosciutto as well as pasta with saut ed cauliflower in the most incredible sauce of garlic and oil. Yum Knowing we had more to come we regretfully didn t soak up every last drop of sauce as tempting as it was. Family style platters of juicy roast Chicken Al with garlic onions peppers and potatoes are served over saut ed spinach while the Zuppe de Pesce is loaded with lobster shrimp scallops clams mussels served over linguine. Beef Bracciola offers tender beef rolled and cooked in tomato sauce and Italian Sunday Feast covers all bases and includes sausage meatball pork rib as well as bracciola with rigatoni. Delicate Veal is prepared Marsala Parmigiana or Francese style. All entrees include Anthony s famous mussels marinara and house salad. From escarole to broccoli side dishes are a perfect compliment and include an assortment of fresh vegetables saut ed in olive oil and garlic. For a sweet ending we enjoyed our creamy cappuccino with crisp cannolii with a luscious filling decadent chocolate cake creamy Tiramisu Italian Ricotta cheesecake and crunchy biscotti. Don t miss out on Meatballs and Martini s happy hour every Thursday night until closing. Open Tuesday through Sunday for Lunch and dinner Anthony s Runway 84 is located at 330 State Road 84 in Fort Lauderdale. Reservations are recommended by calling (954) 467-8484. On March 18 th two bands from each of the city s four public high schools will be taking part in the first ever local Battle of the Bands . Organized in part by the Coral Springs Council of Executive Officers the event promises a fun night for the community. I thought this would be a great opportunity to raise money for the high schools as well as to give kids an exciting program said Barry Spiegel the Chairman of the Council and owner of several Dunkin Donuts stores in Coral Springs. The Battle of the Bands will be held at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts. Each high school Coral Glades Coral Springs Taravella and Stoneman Douglas were invited to pick local bands to represent their school. Every school has the opportunity to root for two teams said Spiegel who is organizing the event. Spiegel first came up with the idea for the Battle of the Bands because as a local store owner he has been supporting local fundraisers for the schools for the past five years. I have gotten a lot of feedback from the principals in the city that any way they can raise money would be very helpful he said. In addition to the Council which is a group of twenty two local business owners in Coral Springs Spiegel says the Battle of the Bands is proving to be a true community 38 LIFESTYLE MAGAZINES I FEBRUARY 2011 L Battle of the Bands by Elie Sanford effort. The city of Coral Springs has offered fifteen hundred dollars for the event and Spiegel says the Center for the Arts been a big help putting it together as well. The first place winners will take home a five hundred dollar prize and second place will be awarded two hundred and fifty dollars. The schools will also benefit with a portion of the proceeds going toward their music programs as well as bragging rights in the city for at least the next few months. Spiegel says everyone who makes it out to the first ever Battle of the Bands will be making an investment in their community as well as giving residents a chance to instill some local pride. They are supporting the kids and the local high schools and the schools can really use the money because they are not getting the same funding from the state he said. The Battle of the Bands will be held Friday March 18 th at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at Coral Springs City Center box office 954-344-599 or online at www. coralspringscenterforthearts.com.
